Social Media

I got my first cellphone when I was 14 years old. I was a young user at that time. I remembered that all of my classmates were jealous that I had a cellphone, but as time flies, many kids got their cellphones at a younger age. At that time, my cellphone was not functioned for browsing the Internet, but now people can do so many things in their cellphones. Talking through the phone used to be the best way of communicating with others, but today we have multiple choices of communicating with others. Facebook keeps friends stay connected, and Twitter spreads information rapidly.

I recalled that I had my Facebook account when I was 16 years old, which was 3 years ago. Facebook is one of the “sensitive” website in China, so it was blocked by the authority. Few months later, some computer genius successfully invented software, which could break through the block and access the Facebook. Even though I can access to the Facebook by using that software, but the speed was not satisfying. Since Twitter is also blocked by the authority in my country, I could only use a Chinese “copycat” version of Twitter, called ”Weibo”, which means “microblog” in Chinese.

After I left China and came to Ohio State University, I began to use Facebook more frequently, because of the freedom of browsing Internet. I am a starter of Twitter. Although I have some experience on using that Chinese copycat version of Twitter, but I have to admit that the Twitter is well-developed and fascinating. Many groups, organizations and companies use Twitter as the communication platform. Not only public can easily get more information from these organizations, but also individuals can conveniently share ideas with each other.

Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and many other examples of social media are hugely significant for our society. We can easily get to know things happened at the other side of the World in seconds. At this generation, everything is in the fast pace, the convenience that these social media tools bring to us is precious. I believe and wish these media tools can continue to be beneficial to people and our society.
